Position Overview

The Department of Veterinary Clinical & Diagnostic Science in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a Laboratory Supervisor. This Part-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Laboratory Supervisor will oversee the laboratory that will facilitate the research activities in hemodynamics as well as cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Initially, this position will ensure procurement of equipment, supplies and research animals. The key purpose of this position is to manage the laboratories of VCDS faculty which includes oversight of Occupational Health and Safety, assistance with research activities and assistance to postdocs, graduate students and staff. 

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Working in collaboration with the Deputy Department Head, will handle all aspects of laboratory set-up and development, including equipment procurement decisions
  • Ensures laboratory meets all safety standards and practices including WHIMIS, OHS and biosafety
  • Ensures students in laboratory have completed OH&S orientation
  • Carries out and expands research activities
  • Responsible for planning and overseeing execution of experiments and associated research activities as well as analyzing and processing data
  • Implements, plans, and initiates new projects in conjunction with PIs throughout the Department
  • Provides guidance on the activities of technicians as well as graduate students
  • Prepares specialized, technical information or research results for presentation to PI and other internal and external stakeholders
  • Where appropriate, will conduct and summarize current and relevant research and issues
  • Data collection and analysis, report writing, and presentation of the results to the PI in a professional manner
  • Will adhere to SOPs and ensure they are adhered to by all laboratory users such as students, faculty, external clients and researchers
  • Will provide research expertise in the preparation of samples, planning of experiments, interpretation of data, maintenance of detailed records, and preparation of results for presentation
  • Identifies problems and recommended solutions to the Primary Investigator.  Implements solutions and adjusts/monitors as required
  • Will develop an equipment maintenance schedule to ensure a safe and effective laboratory

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Completion of a DVM, or equivalent
  • Completion of an advanced degree (MSc, PhD)
  • Experience in all aspects of WHMIS, OHS and bio-safety training
  • Intermediate knowledge level of Microsoft Office Applications, PeopleSoft as well as imaging software programs (such as Adobe Photoshop) and web-based programs/programming is considered an asset
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential to facilitate interaction with faculty, graduate students and staff (fluency in English is necessary) as well as the ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated teamwork skills in addition to strong organizational, and excellent interpersonal skills
