Position Overview

The Department of Comparative Biology & Experimental Medicine in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a Research Associate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The Research Associate reports and receives direction from the Primary Investigators (PIs) for planning and execution of experiments and associated research activities. This position exists to perform tissue culture, cell and molecular biology related experiments in stem cell biology, as well as transplantation experiments in murine and porcine models, in a laboratory devoted to male germline stem cell biology, to provide support to graduate students and post-doctoral associates in the laboratory, and to assist with overall management of the laboratory. The Research Associate will perform experiments in cell and tissue culture, molecular biology, mouse genetics and transplantation experiments in mice and pigs. The key purpose of this position is to manage day to day operations of the laboratory, perform research and assist postdocs, graduate students and staff with stem cell related research. The Research Associate also supports the PIs in preparation of grant proposals and manuscripts for publication.
This position is predominantly located at Foothills Campus, but may occasionally require work at the Spy Hill Campus for work with large animal models. This position works 35 hours a week, Monday to Friday, and may occasionally require to work outside regular work hours.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Carries out and expands research activities
  • Presenting specialized, technical information or research results to internal and external stakeholders
  • Where appropriate, current and relevant research and issues investigation is conducted and summarized
  • Will contribute to the establishment/development of protocols (animal care, regulatory) and ensure they are adhered to by self and all laboratory users such as students, faculty, external clients and researchers
  • Specific activities include, but are not limited to, cell and tissue culture, analysis of transgenic mouse strains, transplantation to recipient mice and pigs and maintenance of recipients, cell and molecular biological analysis of cultured cells, stem cell derivation, and assistance with animal in vivo studies
  • Other integral duties may also include preparing tissue culture solutions and reagents, planning of experiments, interpretation of data, maintenance of detailed records, and preparation of results for presentation
  • Identify problems and recommended solutions to the Primary Investigators
  • Contribute to the development and revision of policies and procedures as appropriate
  • May be involved in additional research projects, as required and when time is available
  • Maintains confidentiality, adheres to safety regulations, and is flexible in providing assistance in other areas as required
  • Interacts with facility users (faculty, students, staff, and others) in a pleasant and respectful manner when providing assistance

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • An undergraduate degree or diploma in a relevant discipline (eg BSc) and an advanced degree (MS, PhD) are required
  • Advanced education and extensive experience in a research environment are essential
  • Experience in all aspects of cell and tissue culture, and molecular biology techniques (qPCR, western blotting, PCR genotyping) is essential
  • Experience in laboratory management (ordering, equipment maintenance), preparation of grants and manuscripts, and supervision of students would be considered an asset
  • Intermediate knowledge level of Microsoft Office Applications, PeopleSoft as well as imaging software programs (such as Adobe Photoshop) and web-based programs/programming is considered an asset
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential to facilitate interaction with faculty, graduate students and staff (fluency in English is necessary) as well as the ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated teamwork skills, strong organizational, and excellent interpersonal skills
